Everyone loves pirates. Who doesn't love a good swashbuckling adventure? We couldn't resist ourselves when it came to our love of the original rebels and decided to school our campers this week with a little bit of the seafarin' life!
The kids made their own pirate hats, eyepatches and swords as part of their costumes, and we've been working on a bit of pirate speak, courtesy of International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Alessandra will have the kids decorate their very own treasure chests to participate in a scavenger hunt! We're looking forward to that on Friday. In the meantime, have a read of our Pirate Adventure!
Pirates are celebrating and feasting on fruits and veggies to make sure they don’t get scurvy on their sea journey – they’ve found a treasure map in a bottle! The map leads to a mysterious island in the middle of the ocean and the legend of the buried treasure of Captain Bluenose! They’ll have to be brave pirates to battle a sea monster and overcome a terrible storm – and finally find the mysterious island! They follow the map and dig at the ‘X’, where they find a chest full of pieces of eight, doubloons, precious gems and pearls – and they wondrous treasure of the Magical Invisible Ever-Changing Whirly-Burly Ball – changing into any round object the holder desires! With their bountiful booty, they sail back home to the Caribbean, where they become the most famous pirates of all for revealing the legend of Captain Bluenose!
Scene: The pirates are feasting on their favourite fruits and vegetables as they prepare to take a sea journey. They sing heartily and dance a jig and practice their ‘sword fighting’ until the pirate Captain Sassypants enters with her parrot, Peggy. The pirates all cheer when the captain holds up a bottle with a message inside.
Captain Sassypants
Avast, me hearties – here be a treasure map to a mysterious island!
ALL PIRATES
(Throwing their hands in the air.) YAAARRRRRRRRR!
Peggy the Parrot
SQUWACK! Treasure map! Mysterious island! SQUWACK!
Captain Sassypants
Aye! And on this island, we’ll find the legendary booty of the great pirate Captain Bluenose!
ALL PIRATES
(Throwing their hands in the air.) YAAARRRRRRRRR!
Peggy the Parrot
SQUWACK! Captain Bluenose! SQUWACK!
Captain Sassypants
So get on your sea legs, me mateys, and hoist the Jolly Roger, for we sail the high seas! Any of you scallywags not on the good ship Lollipop in a shake of a parrots tail, I’ll make ye walk the plank into Davy Jones Locker!
ALL PIRATES
(Saluting.) AYE AYE, CAPTAIN! (ALL PIRATES exit off stage left.)
Peggy the Parrot
SQUWACK! Walk the plank! SQUWACK!
Scene change: The pirates board the pirate ship Lollipop with Captain Sassypants and Peggy the Parrot, standing at the ships wheel. The pirates sway with the waves of the ocean as they sail the high seas as they revel in the tale of Captain Bluenose.
Captain Sassypants
Yaaarrrrr, me mateys! We make sail! Breathe the honest air of the high seas!
(ALL PIRATES take a deep breath through the nose at the same time, as if smelling something delicious.)
PIRATE #1
Aye, Captain, tell us the tale of Bluenose’s treasure!
ALL PIRATES
YAAARRRRRRRRR! (ALL PIRATES lean in to listen to the story, looking incredibly interested.)
Peggy the Parrot
SWQUACK! Bluenose treasure! SWQUACK!
Captain Sassypants
Aye, mateys! Legend tells of a vast treasure hidden long ago by Captain Bluenose on a mysterious island in the middle of the ocean. Aye, there be enough doubloons and pieces of eight and precious jewels for everybody! I make an oath to share!
ALL PIRATES
(Throwing their hands in the air.) BY THUNDER, WE BE RICH!
PIRATE #2
And what be the fate of Captain Bluenose?
Captain Sassypants
No one knows, mateys. Legend says he was eaten by a great sea monster, some say it was a terrible squall. He threw his map overboard in a glass bottle before his sea rover joined the flanks of Davy Jones. Rumour has it that treasure has something the world has never seen before! Many pirates have tried to find the treasure of Captain Bluenose, but they never came back again!
ALL PIRATES
(Acting scared.) SHIVER ME TIMBERS!
Peggy the Parrot
SQUWACK! Sea monster! SQUWACK!
Captain Sassypants
Yes, Peggy, it’s a sad tale. Captain Bluenose will always be remembered.
(ALL PIRATES cover their hearts with their hands as they pay respects to the fallen pirate captain.)
Peggy the Parrot
No! SQUWACK! Sea monster over there! SQUWACK!
Peggy the Parrot motions to stage left, where everyone turns to see to a sea monster entering, threatening the pirates and their ship. The pirates prepare for battle and gather their ‘cannon balls’!
Captain Sassypants
Fire off the cannons! Blow the monster to smithereens, me hearties!
(The pirates throw ‘cannon balls’ at the sea monster, eventually destroying it. The pirates all cheer at their victory!)
Captain Sassypants
Aye, the shipmates of the good ship Lollipop are a brave crew!
ALL PIRATES
(Throwing their hands in the air in celebration.) YAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
(Dark clouds appear above the pirate ship, threatening a storm.)
PIRATE #3
Captain, we be heading into a squall!
Captain Sassypants
Batten down the hatches, mateys! All hands on deck! This stormy squall be a mighty wind!
The pirates follow Captain Sassypants as they sway wildly through the storm. (Remember to ‘plant roots’ from your feet!) The clouds begin to clear and the sun appears again.
Captain Sassypants
We’ve survived the squall, mateys! There be clear skies on the horizon!
PIRATE #4 pulls out a telescope and ‘sees’ land in the distance.
PIRATE #4
(Looks through the telescope and points.) LAND HO, CAPTAIN!
ALL PIRATES
(Pointing in the same direction as PIRATE #4.) LAND HO!
(Captain Sassypants looks at the treasure map and compares the island they all ‘see’ on the horizon.)
Captain Sassypants
Why, this be the mysterious island that’s on the treasure map! Drop the anchors, mateys – we’re going ashore!
Peggy the Parrot
SQUWACK! Going ashore! SQUWACK!
Captain Sassypants and Peggy the Parrot gets off the pirate ship first, helping the pirates disembark the pirate ship one by one. They gather at centre stage, happy to be on dry land. Captain Sassypants and Peggy the Parrot joins them at centre stage with the glass bottle and map.
Captain Sassypants
Avast, my pet parrot Peggy, you’ve been a brave bird to be searching for lost treasure with us pirates. Here’s a cracker for your parched beak.
(Captain Sassypants hands Peggy the Parrot a cracker, who flies off to stage right to enjoy the treat. Captain Sassypants presents the map to the pirates.)
PIRATE #5 pulls out a big compass.
PIRATE #5
Where ye be headed first, Captain?
Captain Sassypants
The map says we head east-west …
ALL PIRATES take one step left, then one step right.
Captain Sassypants
Then we head north-south …
ALL PIRATES take one step behind and one step ahead.
Captain Sassypants
We take three big steps to the right and we look for two big palm trees. That’s where we find our ‘X’! And every pirate of the seven seas knows what that means!
ALL PIRATES
‘X’ MARKS THE SPOT!
Peggy the Parrot
(From stage right, enjoying the treat.) SQUWACK! ‘X’ marks the spot! SQUWACK!
The pirates take three big steps together with Captain Sassypants towards two tall palm trees and an ‘X’ on the ground.
Captain Sassypants
Yar, we’ll find an ‘X’ for the treasure around here somewhere.
ALL PIRATES
(Points at the ‘X’ on the floor.) AVAST! HERE IT BE!
Captain Sassypants
Let’s get to diggin’, mateys!
ALL PIRATES mime digging into the ground until Captain Sassypants hits something hard in the ground with her shovel.
Captain Sassypants
We’ve found the treasure chest, me hearties!
ALL PIRATES
(Drop their shovels and throw their hands in the air.) YAAARRRRRRRRR! WE BE RICH!
ALL PIRATES help move the treasure chest to centre stage, where Captain Sassypants opens it for the pirates to see what’s inside.
PIRATE #6
(Takes a piece of treasure from the chest.) Shiver me timbers, this is a lot of treasure!
Captain Sassypants
And wait, me lads and lassies – the most important treasure, something the world has never seen before! The Magical Invisible Ever-Changing Whirly-Burly Ball!
This is just like the ‘Pass the Ball’ game that we played in our drama class during camp! Captain Sassypants will pass the ball to PIRATES #7, #8 and #9 and it will change into something different each time. PIRATE #9 hands the ‘ball’ back to Captain Sassypants, who puts it back in the treasure chest.
Captain Sassypants
We did it, me hearties! We’ve vanquished the sea monster, we’ve survived a stormy squall, and we’ve found the legendary treasure of Captain Bluenose!
ALL PIRATES
(Throwing their treasure-filled hands in the air.) YAAARRRRRRRRR! WE BE RICH!
Captain Sassypants
Avast, me hearties – back to the good ship Lollipop! We feast on fruits and veggies for our scurvy-free journey home!
ALL PIRATES cheer as they make their exit on stage left.
